Old T-Ford

I followed an old Tuktuk up slope of a hill As it struggled, startled and coughed trying to climb Sometimes you would be tempted to think it would blink As it wheezed, stuttered and stammered soon it reached the brow and it nearly dithered As it wheezed and rattled one more time Then downhill it went happy it made it though
“Whoop, whoop, whoop”, it sped on
Then it reminded me of a story in early 1900’s of an old backslide T-Ford driven by a young Baptist Minister That in the morn took muscle and crankin’ to bring it to life
When it warmed a little and started on the road with crashing of gears It climbed on a hill, one after another, coughing and whooping as it went “I hope I can make it, I hope I can make, I hope I can make it”
Slowly and surely edging close to the brow, nearly halting, nearly faulting Then it made it to the top as it wheezed and coughed once or twice more Then downhill it rolled, whizzing past trees and whizzing past streets chanting “I knew I could make it, I knew I could make it, I knew I could make it “Thirty miles an hour, fifteen this way and fifteen up-and-down this a-way”
The old T-Ford is rusted and long gone But the story it told is never too sour to hold Sometime like the Old T-Ford we are battered by age, cage and stale Till we know not whether we can make it through one hill or another Many times nearly halting, Many times nearly faulting But if you keep on confessing, and you stop disgusting Then you can climb on, wedge on wedge, bit by bit hissing “I Know I can make it, I know I can make it, I know I can make it Slowly and surely edging close, though bowed and low to the brow You may wheeze, sneeze and stutter once or twice but keep on Always positive, always confessing, you can and you will Then wait and watch the brow soon appearing and downhill you will roll With this confession ever true, ever living
I knew, I knew, I knew, I knew, I knew I could make it,
Refrain
I know I can make it, I can make it, I can make it I know I can make it, I can make it, I can make it Soon I will run and start confessing I knew, I knew, I knew, I knew, I knew I could make it,
And now I can stand and start praising I know, I know, I know, I know, I know I can make it
I can make it, I can make it, I can make it
God bless you
